Microsoft software is incredibly popular.  By far the greatest majority of PCs in the world run Microsoft software. This means that viruses have a field day.  It's like a monoculture.  In agriculture, if you have vast fields of the same crop and an infection like potato blight takes hold, it can run away out of control and devastate entire farms.  Having different strains of potato which are resistant to some kinds of blight, will not only save some of the crop but stop, or at least hinder, the blight spreading.  The same can be true of viruses spreading through computers which are usually Microsoft-only.  If you could use other software to surf the web, send and receive E-mails and do word processing then you have a very good chance of being immune.  The good news is that such software exists and it is free!   Look into Firefox, OpenOffice and Thunderbird.  You can download them and install them on Windows without charge.

Of course, using Windows itself makes you vulnerable to these viruses.  If you are adventurous, you can even replace Windows with one of the many varieties of Linux, such as Ubuntu or SuSE, which can run on your desktop or laptop computer - again for free!  Linux on the desktop is getting almost as easy to use as Windows.  Firefox, OpenOffice and Thunderbird also run on Linux, so you have all the usual facilities and you won't have to worry too much about viruses.  Many, many other programs are available although games are rather limited.  We can help you make this transition if you're up for it.
